Autoimmune, GMO, & Organic. Or... Why I Don't Eat Frankenfood

So, I was eating a cookie the other day...

Well, of course silly, it was organic and gluten free - I'm no fool! ;)

Anyway...

I started to reminisce about making them with my mom when I was a child. Do you remember wanting to make some cookies and being so impatient that you tried to make them on your own? The end result was a big hot mess!

Why?

Because as children we didn't understand the power of ratios or the relationship between matter and heat. You know, if a pinch of salt was good, wouldn't a tablespoon be better? Or if the the cookies baked well at 325 degrees for 25 min, couldn't I get them in my mouth faster if they cooked at 450 degrees?

We measly little humans tend to believe things work in a vacuum and don't usually think through all of the possible consequences!

For example: we have treated elements inside our bodies as if they function independently. If we have headaches we focus on the brain, if we have acne we focus on the skin, if we have heart problems we call our shrink... ;)

Science is fascinating as it rips the veil revealing more and more about God's design. Not only are elements inside us connected, things like trees and mushrooms depend on each other for survival, and we too are connected to His creation in nature and depend on each other!

Why do I bring this up, you ask?

Well, when we don't completely understand the relationship between things and how almost everything is interrelated, we can create a big hot mess!

Case in point are Genetically Modified Organisms, known here on the streets as GMOs. Let's break that down so we are all on the same page of understanding...

Genetically = genetics = genes = DNA

Modified = change = manipulated

Organism = plant or animal

The end result is an organism that contains genetic material into which DNA from a different species has been artificially introduced.

Have the hairs on the back of your neck stood up yet? If not, keep reading as you are about to enter the twilight zone!

When we take a yellow rose and cross pollenate it with a blue rose, we hope to create a green rose (not really but you get where I'm going with this, right?) That process is considered a lateral transfer that takes place within the same species- in my rose example, it is a flower to a flower.

Normal right? We do this all the time with new dog breeds, vegetable varieties, lipstick colors...

Haha, love the look on your face, I'm just keeping you on your toes. ;)

So why do GMOs make my eyes cross?

Grab your pocket protectors; we need to get a bit geeky here!

You see, with GMOs both lateral AND horizontal gene transfers can take place.

And that, my friend, is scary.

Why?

That means that genes transfer within the same species and between UNRELATED species (like corn and a pig). The very nature of GMOs is grossly different than what God created, therefore they contain new combinations of genes by creating synthetic genes that have never existed in human history!

On top of that warm and fuzzy, DNA of GMOs tend to be structurally unstable and therefore, prone to break and rejoin, giving way to numerous genetic rearrangements during the transfer.

Holy smokes, Bateman!

I don't know about you, but the only time I want my genes to be rearranged in such an unnatural way, is when I get my glorified body!

And really, who thought introducing UNSTABLE genes into our environment was a good idea!?

...I guess we only need to follow the money to answer that question!

Okay, push your glasses back up your nose as we dive a bit deeper into some science...

For a gene to be expressed, it needs something called a promoter signal. There is a common promoter that is in practically every commercial GMO crop called CaMV355. We'll never remember that, so let's call it Fred, shall we? (Yes, I know I used "Fred" in a different blog, but I like to keep things simple.)

The promoter signal, Fred, is a recombination hotspot within our mitochondria which improves the chances of horizontal transfer of the GMO's DNA! Fred is not only active in plants but is, in fact, active in species across the living world - If you are living, when reading this, then this includes you!

To say that a different way: There is evidence showing that DNA from GMOs can survive digestion and transfer into animal and human cells! It can even pass through the placenta and into the fetus, it can also penetrate the blood/brain barrier!

You're right- that stinks!

It is also known to contain the potential to activate dormant viruses and trigger cancer!

One other fact that should make you look around suspiciously is that antibiotic resistance marker genes have been inserted into most GMO foods on the market.

Haven't you heard the news stories of how our society is becoming more and more antibiotic resistant? But according to the biochemical companies there is no correlation, in other words, there's nothing to see here folks, just keep on walking. Do not point out the obvious, do not pass Go, do not collect $200...

THIS. IS. HUGE!

So let's bring this a bit closer to home...

When Glyphosate (read some of the evils of that here) is programmed into the genes of say, corn, that poison can get transferred to us humans via the intestinal tract.

Keeping that in mind...

Let's now look at what that means for us autoimmuners.

When we eat GMO foods, we are introducing Frankenfood to our system. We are expecting an immune system, which is designed to only process real food, to now understand and properly handle unnatural elements.

It can't.

There is nothing programmed into the design to process synthetic genes! So, how does our body usually handle it? By storing these toxic elements, creating free radicals and therefore inflammation!

I mean, I'm the first to stand up for free stuff, and I have been known to be a radical at times, but I know enough not to want any more free radicals!

Naysayers like to make fun of people like us autoimmuners, because they think we are just jumping on the latest bandwagon. They think the clean food revolution is a silly fad which they hope will fade away; However, when something is effecting 80 million people, shouldn't we stop and ask why?

80 million people are not just wanting to be part of the cool kids crowd.

Why are we demanding cleaner food? Because we know better!

We have science backing our beliefs. What they need to understand is that if we continue on this destructive path, we will go extinct.

Dramatic hyperbole?

No, it's the cold hard facts. We autoimmuners are the proverbial canary in the coal mine. If we don't stand up now and fight, we will have a big hot mess on our hands.

So what can you do to stop this madness?

Do I recommend writing to your congressman? It couldn't hurt, but I doubt they'd listen. Do I recommend calling biochemical companies and demanding they stop growing GMOs? No, I guarantee they'd never listen!

So what is an autoimmuner to do?

Easy.

Hit them in their pocketbook!

The list of action steps I provide below is the easiest and most satisfying way of kicking them where it hurts. When I go to a store and see their organic and all-natural shelf space expanding I giggle with excitement, because I know we are getting the right info into the hands of people who think.

The biochemical companies have too much money for us to fight in court or through legislation. But we can be part of a silent revolution just by making better food choices.

I know how you feel- eating clean does seem expensive, but remember eating organic isn't as expensive as being sick.

We have crated a training video that will help you to understand how to reverse your autoimmune disorder.

You can watch the '5 Steps To Reversing Autoimmune Disorders' here

...my timer just dinged! I'm off to pour me a glass of coconut milk and eat my organic, gluten-free cookie! Enjoy your afternoon!

Trust me when I say, I know these changes are going to seem a little strange at first. But it’s important to understand that implementing small changes, like this, into your life can bring significant improvements in your health, as every little step brings you that much closer to your health goals. I suffered from an autoimmune for years, but by implementing habits like this into my life, I am able to participate in life again.
